Committee Guidelines and Mandate

The Africa initiative is a collective term used for describing various WFN activities related to the development of neurology in the African region. They comprise training of new neurologists, establishing educational programmes in neurology, supporting new national neurological associations, assistance in fund-raising for neurology in this part of the world, travelling fellowships, support of public health activities in sub-Saharan Africa and collaboration with WHO, EFNS and IBRO.

The WFN structural basis of the Africa initiative has two arms, the Task and Advisory Force for Africa (TAFNA) and the WFN Africa Committee (ACWFN).

TAFNA ("Friends of Africa") is chaired by the WFN President. The members are neuroscientists with a personal background in African medicine.

ACWFN consists of neurologists living and working in Africa. For French-speaking African countries, training of neurologists will mainly be in Senegal, Morocco and Tunisia, while training of neurologists from the English-speaking countries may be established in South Africa. The ACWFN shall therefore have members from French- and English-speaking sub-Saharan African countries. It is presently (2008) chaired by Amadou Gallo Diop (Senegal), Alfred Njamshi (Cameroon) and Beugre Kouassi (Ivory Coast).

The Task and Advisory Force for Africa Committee shall consist of the President, the First Vice-President, the Secretary-Treasurer General and the Chair, Education Officer and Treasurer of the WFN Africa Committee. This committee shall be empowered to act on behalf of the Council of Delegates between regular meetings of the Council and its decisions shall subsequently be reported to the Trustees.

Guidelines for TAFNA Committee:

  1. To conduct an annual review of the neurology training status in sub-Saharan Africa.
  2. To be responsible for securing any and all additional funds designed for development of neurology in Africa.
  3. To have a close relationship with the EFNS Africa Committee.
  4. To have a close relationship with the Pan African Association of Neurological Sciences.
  5. To make recommendations to the Regional Director for the Africa region.
  6. To make recommendations to the Trustees regarding future meetings and congresses.

Guidelines for the WFN Africa Committee:

  1. The ACWFN will have a close contact with the WFN Regional Director for the Africa region.
  2. The ACWFN is responsible for monitoring the status of neurology training in sub-Saharan Africa.
  3. The ACWFN shall collaborate with the PAANS.
  4. The ACWFN prepares a budget with the mandatory prioritization.

Guidelines & Procedures

The Nominating Committee is appointed by, and functions directly under, the President of the WFN and is independent of the Secretariat. The life of the current Committee is from 2005 to 2009.

The guidelines for the Nominating Committee are :

  1. To solicit, by mail and other forms of communication, nominations for the offices of Trustee and Officer as defined in the 'Memorandum and Articles of Association of the WFN', at least one-and-a-half years before the appropriate AGM.

Invitations to submit nominations will be sent by email, fax and letter of former and current Officers, Trustees, Committee Members, and Delegates of the WFN as well as all interested members of the world neurological community.

  2. To evaluate the initial list of nominations sent to the Nominating Committee and scrutinize each nominee's stature, contributions, and commitment to the growth and development of the WFN.

  3. To give due consideration to geography and gender in evaluating nominations and, if these considerations are lacking, supplement them by identifying appropriate candidates from the WFN database.

  4. To request support of each nominee from his or her national neurological organization in identifying and verifying potential candidates for short listing.

  5. To send the agreed list of nominees for Trustee and Officer, which may or may not be ranked, to the Secretariat in London in time for publication, including in the winter issue of World Neurology and the Journal of Neurological Sciences at least six months before the AGM for voting by WFN Delegates.

  6. To add to that list all further nominations supported by the signatures of five (5) or more authorized Delegates for the offices of Trustee and Officer that are received by the Secretariat at least 30 days prior to the AGM.

  7. To ask each nominee for President and First Vice-President to submit a statement of his or her goals and objectives for publication in World Neurology, if requested by the Trustees.

WFN Elections 2010

In accordance with the Memorandum and Articles of Association of the World Federation of Neurology, the election of one new Trustee will take place at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Council of Delegates later this year.

If you wish to propose a candidate, please be in touch with either your national society or WFN Delegate (whose name appears on the WFN website – www.wfneurology.org). Names of those who are willing to serve and who receive the official support of their national society must arrive at the WFN London headquarters office by Friday, 19th February, 2010.

The names of candidates will be published. It is open to anyone to make additional nominations by securing the supporting signatures of five or more authorized WFN Delegates and submitting the name(s) of the individual(s) in question to the Secretary-Treasurer General, c/o the WFN Headquarters office, at least thirty days prior to the date of the Council of Delegates’ Annual General Meeting
