4-Year Training position for African Neurologists in Dakar, Senegal - Call for Candidates

World Federation of Neurology (WFN) is pleased to partner with two WFN Teaching Centres – The Department of Neurology of Cheikh Anta Diop, Dakar, Senegal on supporting one visiting residency Programme for one African neurologist.

World Federation of Neurology (WFN) has 119 member societies and aims to foster brain health worldwide, working in partnership with the World Health Organisation (WHO) amongst others.

Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, Senegal

Cheikh Anta Diop University is the current name of the former university of Dakar. It was created in 1918 under the name of "école africaine de médecine" (African medical school) and is, to date, one of the oldest academic universities in French-speaking Africa. In 1987, it became Cheikh Anta Diop University to honor the Senegalese philosopher and anthropologist, Cheikh Anta Diop.

Cheikh Anta Diop University hosts more than 100,000 students who come mostly from the African French-speaking countries. There are also some students from English, Portuguese, and Arabic-speaking countries. These students are divided into faculties (science and technology, medicine and pharmacy, languages and human sciences, education and training, and law and political sciences), institutes and schools. The faculty of medicine and pharmacy is the most prestigious in the university and hosts the majority of foreign students. The staff includes more than 250 researchers and teachers. Training in neurology has been ongoing since 2001 and lasts 4 years with a programme in accordance with the official programme of the West African Health Organization (WAHO).

Project description

The WFN will offer a full training program in neurology for one trainee from the African continent. The four-year training program will be provided in French, at the Cheikh Anta Diop, Dakar, Senegal starting in September/October 2017.

A yearly evaluation of the trainee's progress will be made by Dakar University and reported to the WFN education committee.

Details about the fellowship grant

The visiting fellow will receive the following support for the training period of 4 years

  • Yearly reimbursement for one economy round-trip ticket from the Fellow's country of residence to Dakar, Senegal
  • Free accommodation and board at the University residence
  • A monthly allowance for living expenses (food and beverage)
  • Medical insurance for the trainee

Attention: Please note that support is provided for the visiting trainee only, and does not include family or dependents. The WFN is not responsible for financial issues other than related to the project.

Criteria for applications

  • In addition to graduation from a medical school, the applicant should preferably have completed at least one year of internal medicine (general medicine) training
  • The applicant must be a resident of an African country [1]
  • The applicant must be born after 31.12.1977
  • French proficiency: oral and written, for the position in Dakar, Senegal
